Auto transformers have one winding that is tapped to achieve specific output voltage. They provide no electrical isolation in a circuit. Auto transformers are typically smaller than their isolation equivalent. Isolation transformers have two separate windings with an electrostatic shield between them to provide complete electrical isolation from the source.
